IC INFORMATION

Character Name: Sasarai
Canon: Suikoden
Canon Point: After returning home at the end of Suikoden III
Background: Wiki

Suitability:

As a bishop of Holy Harmonia he is used to commanding a lot of political power while also being a subordinate to the High Priest Hikusaak. He has served as a general for Harmonia twice so he is also used to both following and giving orders in the context of a war. Despite his breezy, laid back demeanor, Sasarai can be politically cunning. How his political games would pan out in Abraxas depends on in-game events.

Recently he has learned through his twin brother, Luc, that he is actually a clone of Hikusaak created specifically to contain the True Earth Rune. This revelation has shaken Sasarai enough that he is no longer willing to follow others blindly. Combined with his natural curiosity, this could lead to him questioning orders and trying to discover answers about his in-game situation on his own. He's clever enough to find these answers in subtle ways. For example, he might hire another character and use them as a spy or try to manipulate personalities around him to play off each other in a way he directly benefits from.

His curiosity could lead to him wanting to study the Singularity and decide if it's a threat to his world. Multiverse theory is common where he's from so this possibility will come to him quickly.

The revelation about his birth has also given Sasarai an existential crisis that he is still working through which could leave him particularly vulnerable to psychological horror situations. Unfortunately for everyone around him he has a True Rune that could act up in response to his stress.

In Abraxas he'd probably try to climb social ladders so he can work from a position of power similar to the one he used to have. His problem, aside from the fact that he does not know this new world, is that he was born into his position back home. Experience has taught him what sort of words sound nice to the right ears but he has never had to socially climb before. He might get himself in over his head. If he is unsuccessful in climbing ranks he'd still interact with the plot as a scholar and mage who knows happens to know a lot about war and politics.

Powers:
Like most other people from his home dimension, Sasarai's powers come from Runes which are magical crystals affixed to his body. He will come in with only one Rune on him:

True Earth Rune: One of the Twenty Seven True Runes that govern Sasarai's world. True Earth is affixed to his right hand but its power reaches deeper into his body. As long as he carries it he won't age, is resistant to mind control, and is immune to disease.

It gives him the following spells:

Guardian Earth: Cures all status ailments from himself and his allies. (Could easily fail at times with the reasoning that it's being used outside Sasarai's world.)

Earthquake: Creates a magical earthquake.

Canopy Defense: Barrier that protects against magical attacks.

Land of Eternity: Even bigger earthquake.

The more powerful the spell, the less frequently Sasarai can use it. These spells also have lengthy incantations that can be interrupted.

Unlike lesser Runes, the True Earth Rune is sentient. Sasarai was created specifically to be its vessel so he has a harmonious relationship with it. In addition to the above spells the True Earth Rune allows Sasarai to lift barriers of light to protect himself and allies from harm and allows him to use basic geomancy. If Sasarai is cornered the True Earth Rune may give him temporarily enhanced powers like greater strength or stronger magic. If it feels it is under immense threat, it can manifest as a monstrous creature (a Rune Incarnation).

True Earth can be unpredictable due to its sentience but no matter what it cannot grant Sasarai powers outside its purview which means no speed or flight or enhanced elemental magic other than earth.

Using magic granted by the True Earth Rune is spiritually and physically exhausting. If Sasarai ever needs to tap into its most powerful abilities he will need at least a full day's rest to recover. Even basic magic from the Rune is tiring at times.

Removing the Rune is possible only through certain magical techniques. This process is traumatizing for Sasarai and leaves him frail and sickly for a long time afterward. The Rune will always attempt to return to him if left unsealed.

While carrying the True Rune makes Sasarai immortal it does not make him invincible. He dies to the same attacks that would kill a normal human as long as the attacker takes him out before True Earth knows what is happening.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
Sasarai was born into a lofty position so he grew up sheltered and wasn't able to have a big, life defining experience until very recently. That experience is the revelation that he is a clone of High Priest Hikusaak. Luc, also a clone, showed him the components they were made up of and explained their true nature. Sasarai was so confused and repulsed that Luc was able to take advantage of his disturbed state and extract his True Earth Rune. Sasarai was able to get the Rune back and return to Harmonia. Once he returned home he resumed his position as a bishop but was shaken to the point of having deep existential anxiety and questions about his role in the world.

Confronting his existential crisis will be something he'll have to do in-game. It will take a long time. Since he was never taught healthy coping mechanisms he will likely dig deep into setting events to try to avoid dealing with it but this will only work for so long.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
While Sasarai understands that war sometimes cannot be avoided he doesn't enjoy it and prefers non-violence. If he sees something happening that could lead to social unrest or war he does his best to stop it before things can escalate.

He believes very strongly in justice and social good but sees these things through the lens of Harmonian/Lawful Neutral ideals which means he tends to be an "ends justify the means" sort of person. For example during a period of war he might invade a territory to avoid a prolonged conflict that would further destabilize the region and lead to more deaths.

His personal definition of justice and order come from his upbringing so he is prone to placing belief in the power granted by society. This is slowly changing due to his existential crisis but it's deeply ingrained.

What quality or qualities do they admire most?
Cleverness and cunning are both valuable to Sasarai. He is very clever and cunning himself and he has learned to use this to his advantage in seizing opportunities, especially political ones. It's a quality he admires in himself and he will sometimes flaunt it in the way he speaks. He will play mind games with people or sometimes openly joke, mock or make snarky comments just to entertain himself.

Cleverness is also a quality he values deeply in his chosen allies. For example, his aide-de-camp, Dios, is someone who caught his eye and was hired for being clever, a quality none of Dios's other superiors noticed. The spy Nash's talents also intrigued him and he later hired Nash directly by cornering him into owing a favor.

Sasarai also values loyalty and honor and expects both in the people who serve him or choose to ally themselves with him.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
Sasarai might judge himself on small things like a lack of physical prowess and if he dwells on his existential crisis he might wonder if he was blindly loyal for most of his life. If he was blindly loyal then how much of his life had meaning? Should he even be wondering about that? These questions disturb him.

Generally, however, he doesn't actively dislike anything about himself.

Sasarai does have ugly sides to him: He can be smug, condescending, very rude, especially when upset, sometimes lacking in empathy and isn't always as clever as he thinks he is. He doesn't have the self awareness to realize he's like this.

What is their sign, and why?
Judgement.

Sasarai has been a literal conqueror before, having lead Harmonian invasions during war time. Outside war he's a well respected politician who is very good at winning the favor of a crowd. While he makes a good leader, he's never had to be the person who was fully in charge and would need to adjust to having that sort of authority. In his own world he was a bishop, very powerful and a face for the church, but the true leader was the High Priest.
